Millennium & Copthorne Hotels plc - Leisure Development - Sheffield
Date: 25 Jun 2008
Sheffield's joint biggest hotel took another step closer to its opening this week as developers took the wraps off its contemporary southeast facing elevation.
The latest stage of the hotel's construction, based behind the Westfield Corner Stand of United's home ground, has seen the outside of the building clad in a veneer of silver eurobond insulated cladding panels close to the rear of the Capital One Stand.
The £17million project is a result of a link-up with prestigious international company Millennium & Copthorne Hotels plc to operate the four-star hotel, which will include 158-bedrooms, executive suites, a modern bar, fitness suite and restaurant.
The 158-bedroom hotel is set to complement the club's existing leisure and conferencing facilities at the stadium.
John Stacey, Sheffield United's Head of Property, said "The project is moving at a really fast pace now and is on target for its November 2008 completion date.
"The hotel is one of the biggest and most unique projects in Sheffield and will add to the city's increasing reputation as a place to visit and do business.
"The quality of the hotel, fitness suite, and banqueting and conferencing facilities will go hand-in-hand with the club's ultimate goal of Premiership status."
Simon Argall, director of operations at Sheffield United plc, said: "This project has been a massive undertaking and it is fantastic to see it begin to take shape.
"The hotel is a continuation of the club's progression with its off the field developments, while further strengthening the relationship with the surrounding Sharrow community."
Yorkshire-based company GMI Construction Group Plc is working with the Blades on the development
