Tiger Developments - Leisure Development - Edinburgh, Haymarket

Date: 01 Jul 2008

Tiger Developments has secured planning consent from Edinburgh City Council for its £200 million city centre Haymarket scheme.

The plans feature a 192-bedroom, five-star hotel, a neighbouring 245-bedroom Travelodge and 335,000 sq ft (31,122 sq m) of office space. The scheme will also see the creation of a new pedestrian boulevard through the site linking Haymarket and the Exchange financial district.

Due to The City of Edinburgh Council's financial interest in the scheme, and an environmental impact assessment, the application will now be referred to the Scottish Government for final approval. It is hoped that work will start onsite later this year with completion expected in 2012.

John Nesbitt, managing director of Tiger Developments, comments: "We are pleased to have secured approval from the councillors. Tiger Developments devoted a significant amount of time and energy to designing a scheme which represents the best solution for this challenging site.

"The Haymarket will be of immense benefit to Edinburgh by transforming a site which has remained derelict for 40 years into a vibrant new quarter. The project will create in the region of 400 jobs during construction and another 1600 following completion, while injecting an additional £8.75 million of visitor spending into Edinburgh's economy."

The five-star InterContinental, which would face onto Haymarket Junction, has been billed as the Edinburgh's 'third railway hotel' alongside the city's celebrated Caledonian Hilton and Balmoral hotels.

The scheme is located on the former Morrison Street goods yard, one of the last major gap sites in central Edinburgh, and is viewed as strategically important due to its proximity to the Exchange and Haymarket Station, the second busiest in Scotland. Award-winning Edinburgh architects Richard Murphy, CDA and Sutherland Hussey were enlisted to draft the designs for the proposed development.
