Planning application for the Worthing Gateway regeneration project submitted.
A planning application for the Worthing Gateway regeneration project to transform the run-down Teville Gate area has been submitted to Worthing Council by Hanson Capital Management. The £150-million project comprises a new Conference and Exhibition Centre, a 9 screen cinema complex, leisure, residential and retail facilities, including a new supermarket.
In more detail, the Worthing Gateway plans, designed by Russ Drage Architects, include:
· A 9 screen multiplex Cinema
· 260 new homes
· A 100-bedroom high quality hotel
· New restaurants and coffee shops
· A new Conference and Exhibition Centre that will host a wide range of events, from conferences and exhibitions to arts, private functions and community events
· Office suites/business space
· A new supermarket
· Extensive landscaped public spaces
· Car parking for 850 cars, together with disabled, parent/child, cycle and motorcycle parking
· Enhanced pedestrian circulation connecting the town centre with the Station.
· Improved traffic management and new junction layouts with pedestrian-friendly crossings
The plans can be seen on the Worthing Gateway website www.worthinggateway.co.uk
The new plans include the land occupied by the former Teville House tax office which will be demolished. This will enable the inclusion of environmental and landscaping improvements to the approach to Worthing Station, creating a considerably more attractive gateway to the town.
Major pedestrian-friendly improvements are also proposed to the highways around the site, including the removal of the two roundabouts, to make it easier to get to and from the site, across from Chapel Road.
The plans have been given a warm welcome by the majority of the many hundreds of Worthing residents who have commented on the plans which were on display at Worthing Town Hall, Chapel Road for a week from Friday 23rd - Friday 30th July.
Hanson Capital Management say that the new plans for Worthing Gateway will strengthen the town centre by attracting more shoppers to Worthing through improved leisure, food shopping and visitor facilities. In addition, the new apartments will create extra footfall for the existing town centre shops by an increase in the number of people living in the town centre.
Also, over 1,000 new jobs will be created by the new Worthing Gateway development for the local community through the new uses on site and through the construction phase.
John Desmond, Managing Director of Hanson Capital Management said;
"We have had very strong support from the many Worthing residents who came to public exhibition in July and commented on the plans. There is a real desire to get the project moving so that this long-term eyesore can be finally cleared away and a new start made on this key town centre site"
"Our team has worked hard on the new plans so that they can meet the needs of Worthing and be delivered in the changed economic circumstances so that they bring real benefits to the town"
If planning permission is granted in early 2011, demolition work could start in Summer 2011 with the completion of the project in 2014.
The supermarket and cinema are under offer and discussions are progressing with occupiers for the Hotel and Conference and Exhibition Centre.
