Summit Healthcare - General - Preferred Bidder for PFI Project

Date: 11 Apr 2000

Summit Healthcare, a consortium sponsored by Sir Robert McAlpine, Building & Property, and Bank of Scotland Infrastructure Investments has been announced as Preferred Bidder by the Dudley Group of Hospitals NHS Trust for its "Shaping the Future" PFI project.

The scheme, worth a total of £1 billion over the length of the concession, involves the concentration of the majority of the Trust's acute hospital services at the Russells Hall site through a substantial extension and refurbishment of the existing hospital, together with the provision of new ambulatory care centres at Guest and Corbett Hospitals to replace existing but out-dated accommodation.

In addition to the extensive programme of new construction and refurbishment Summit Healthcare will provide a comprehensive portfolio of non-clinical support services to the Trust for the duration of the concession period, expected to be of the order of 40 years. These will include estates management, catering and domestic services, portering, sterile supplies, transport, information technology and the provision of x-ray equipment.

The construction work for the new hospital is expected to be completed by early Summer 2004.

Summit's partner for the provision of IM&T and imaging services is Siemens Healthcare Services and the design team includes Percy Thomas Partnership, Ove Arup, and Hoare Lea. Ashurst Morris Crisp are Summit's legal adviser. Edison Capital will be contributing part of the risk capital.

In conjunction with Law Hospital, currently under construction, this further success on a major hospital PFI project makes Summit Healthcare one of the leaders in this sector of the PFI market
